As much as we all say it doesn't matter, I think it does....a little....even though it shouldn't. If a girl is 20 and admits she has already had 12 partners, isn't there a little part that thinks 'tramp'. And a guy who has only had 1 or 2 we wonder what's going on with that? There are some pretty bad stereotypes that are still in effect.....and if you know your guy has been with 40 different women, sometimes it's hard not to feel like the next on the assembly line.
Personally, I don't think the question needs to be asked at all. It's more important to be sure protection was used, whether it was with 2 people or 20.

This question is STUPID!!!
Only bad things can come from asking this question as one or the other of you will probably have jealous tendencies and will pine over each and every partner the other has had and constantly wonder if they "measure up."
In the end, it doesn't matter how many, it only matters if your partner truly loves you and is devoted to you.
The past is dead! Let it lie.

i wouldn't exclude someone solely because of the number (if it was like under 10, but im only 17) but it depended on if MOST OF IT was protected, or in a relationships with different people....

Personally, I really don't think it matters. If you two are seriously into each other, who cares? I've been with about two dozen girls and am in a long term relationship. We both love each other, so our past is not an issue. Always gotta move forward, not back!
