Scientific Hypothesis is that if a person's caloric intake is greater than their metabolic demand, obesity is the end result. In other words, if you eat more than you burn off, you gain weight.

Recent studies have shown that people who suffer from obesity are genetically different than those who are of average weight. there is a chemical in the brain that average people have, where it is absent in obese individuals.
This chemical signals the brain that the person has eaten and is full - without it the obese person can eat a full meal and 10 minutes later be searching for food in the refrigerator.
Several brain scans were studied and the findings were very similar, if not exact, to the findings in the brain of an alcoholic or drug addict. Obese people actually suffer from a form of PHYSICAL addiction. Obese people get their "high" literally from food. edorphine levels were monitored and proven to be stimulated and increased with the induction of a favorite food. Asn just as a drug addict or alcoholic, over time MORE food is needed to achieve the same "high".
Yes, diet and exercise IS directly related to whether or not a body is average or obese, but imagine being a alcoholic but you HAVE to have a drink every day, but no more. this is what obese people have to go through every day - they are addicted to FOOD, something they have to eat and come in contact with every day.
These people do not lack willpower - most obese people have been on extremely strict diets for the better part of their lives, only to "fall off the wagon" because their drug is so easily available and they are always using it.
Give 'em a break.

If a person consumes more calories than their body uses consistantly, over time they will become obease.
Trust me- I entered every science fair from 1st grade all the way through my junior year of high school. I've written tons of hypothesises.
The reason you state the hypothesis that way is because in your experiment you will be proving a simple equation: a-b=c. a is the amount of calories a person eats. b is the amount of calories person uses. c is the amount of left over calories. If c is positive, then that person is gaining weight.
Say this equation represents one day's worth of eating. For example: I eat 2500 calories today but my body only used 2000. My equation would be 2500-2000=500. I gained 500 calories worth of weight today. Pretend my diet is the same every day. After 7 days, I would have consumed 3500 extra calories. (Fact: 3500 calories = 1 pound of fat).
If I consistantly ate this way (always eating 500 more caloies a day than my body uses) I would gain 52 pounds in one year. I currently weigh 110 pounds at 5'4''. It would take me about 18 months to become obease if I CONSISTENTLY had the equation 2500-2000=500 as my caloric intake.
It doesn't matter if a person is an emotional eater (like Oprah) or if they have a thyroid problem. If you eat more calories than your body uses, you'll gain weight. It's really that simple. I say, skip all that emotional eating and genetic stuff in your experiment and stick to the mathematics of it. Like I said, I've entered tons of science fairs. Sticking to the facts of math will make your work load easier and will help you win awards.
You can also suggest reasons why you think obeasity is such a problem in our country (people eat bigger portions of high calorie foods and they exercise less).
Hope you can use this info! Good luck!

If you combine junk food with no exercize then the results will be obesity!!
Hows that?? Remember that a hypothesis has to be a if, then statement!!
Hope this helps!!

i would suggest technology.
our farming has improved and given us more food.
we're now chemically creating food instead of eating what mother nature gives us.
technology has "simplified" our lives, leaving us doing less. this means less exercise and more pounds on us.

or you could say that obesity is caused by a malfunctioning Thyroid, thus not metabolizing food fast enough
