Buddha didn't want anything from people. He merely came up with a way to be happy in life. He then suggested that people try it out for themselves. And if it worked for them, then great.
As part of that Buddhists follow guidelines called the Five Precepts. Not to kill. Not to steal. To refrain from sexual misconduct, lying or intoxication. But these are less moral standpoints, rather they are things which distract one from a calm mindful lifestyle.

Buddah is NOT god according to buddhist, he is an EXAMPLE of what one should do to reach that perfect inner peace. And that perfect and inner peace comes (according to a buddhist monk) is when you dont have ANY desires left, so that you can be "one with god" so that you wont have to reincarnate a bunch of times.
WE CAN NEVER have no desires, that is A PART our lives. And I desire to reach God is that bad? We need to realize that we can have that true and inner peace through Jesus the one who can wash our sins away. We have a purpose to life, but God said that the wages of sin is death. We CANNOT be in God's Holy presence if we have sin on us. We need Jesus to wash that away. AND knowing and believing that WILL give us that true Nirvana and inner peace.

buddha doesnt want anything from his followers. they are merely followers who beleive buddhas religion and what they do is follow the eight fold path and the five precepts and things like that.
here's a really good chart 3/4 of the way down the page w/ buddhist beliefs. it should be helpful.
http://www.letusreason.org/Buddh1.htm
the four noble truths are in basic terms this:
1. all life is suffering
2. suffering is caused by desire
3. to end suffering we must end desire.
4. to end desire you do meditation and live by the buddhist principles.
read this-
http://buddhism.about.com/library/blbud101basics.htm
that will also be really helpful....
don't think of buddha like a god...he is less like a god and more like a philosopher in my opinion.

Buddha doesn't want anything from anyone. The message is out there, buddhists just have to take it in.

Nothing!
The Buddha is not a god!
What Buddhists do with their lives is strive to achieve Buddha-hood!
EDIT:
As for: "We can never have no desires"...
Do a search on "detachment."
(Never say "never.")
"Buddha" is a title that goes with a level of insight and enlightenment.
