It depends on you preference really. The Frenchies are usually quite a bit smaller than Bulldogs but other than that I don't know much about them. I have 2 Bulldogs and I just love them. I will never again be without a Bulldog as they have the best personalities but I have never owned a French Bulldog so I don't know what their personalities are like. My Bulldogs are my children, I have other dogs but the Bullies are my babies.

I posted this response elsewhere, but thought it was equally appropriate for this question.
Regardless of which breed of bulldog you intend to get, I just thought you might want to know a little bit more about their needs and care. Bulldogs are one of the most "high maintenance" type dogs out there, as far as veterinary care (and care in general) goes.
Bulldogs are genetically predisposed to having upper respiratory problems - primarily stenotic nares (very narrowed nostrils), elongated soft palates, and a poor mouth formation. This all results in severe respiratory discomfort and can easily lead to respiratory distress if the animal becomes over-excited, overheated, or very stressed. Also, they are horrible snorers!! And, they are high surgical risk patients because of their airway conformation issues.
There has been a lot of selective and line breeding, which has brought out some less desirable traits, like conformation problems, food and inhalant allergies, and tail problems.
Oh, and be prepared for lots of cleaning -- bulldogs require that their face folds (wrinkles) be cleaned almost daily. Their tails often corkscrew the wrong way and end up going back towards their body. This means that there's also a lot of cleaning of the hind end to remove fecal matter and anal gland material because the tail does not lift in a normal fashion. And, they're prone to ear infections.
Plus, they are notorious for eating just about anything. We have one at our clinic that has had three gastrotomy-enterotomy surgeries to remove a variety of foreign bodies from his stomach and intestines!
The last thing that I can think of (off the top of my head) is regarding breeding and parturiton. If you're considering buying an animal for breeding, most bulldogs are artificially inseminated because it is difficult for them to mate naturally (due to conformation). So, be prepared for that added expense of having the vet collect semen and inseminate the female. Also, bulldogs are horrible about actually giving birth!! They are the number one c-section breed at our clinic!!
So, I guess it really doesn't matter which type of bulldog you end up with, as long as you purchase from a REPUTABLE breeder (very, very important with these guys) and are well aware of the health and management concerns with these guys! They do make excellent pets and are absolutely adorable as puppies. But make sure you're ready -- they are definitely a handful!!
My personal preference would be a Frenchie -- you don't see a whole lot of them around, plus they are just very unique little animals.

i have a frenchie, and she is the complete opposite of my cousins english bulldog. The english bulldog is a great "petting dog" she lays there and enjoys a belly rub, my frenchie is a firecracker, she loooooves to play and make me laugh, they both have their health problems, so i wouldn't be able to prefer one based on that, i would just say it is based on your own personality, both are adorable!
