When you hear the words "Land of the Free, Home of the Brave" what do you think about? I think of the Greatest Generation, July 4th 1776, General George Washington, and countless other things.

luisa you have no idea what I'm talking about when i say the "Greatest Generation". I'm talking about World War Two. Do some research before you go off talking like that. I wish i could delete that because I think it would be insulting to the many WW2 veterans. *you* don't know who the Greatest Generation was.

I'm getting sick of all the freaking liberal hippies who think there's a conspiracy behind the war on terror. Maybe we did rush into the situation, but we did it for the good of our people, and the good of other people who were and are still threatened by terrorrists. How can you talk about President Bush like that? He might have made some mistakes but you'll see real mistakes when more liberals manage to get in the house.

I picture 6000 Marines dying in a few days on a little Island in the Pacific.
I picture 10000 Americans dying in one hour at Antietam during the Civil War - both sides fighting for their concept of "freedom."
I picture Army Airborne paratroopers dropping into the teeth of German anti-aircraft guns getting slaughtered for Europe.
I picture young Marines taking back the City of Hue in Vietnam from the North Vietnamese after the South Vietnamese refused to let us use Artillery and Fire Power early in the battle to save this worthless City.
I picture the Home of the Brave and the Land of the free spitting at our returning Vietnam Veterans and protesting at the funerals of our returning Iraqi dead.
I picture the Black Athletes raising their fists in defiance and disrespect with their heads bowed during the playing of the National Anthem at the 1968 (?) Olympics.
I picture Jane Fonda sitting on an North Vietname Anti-air craft gun that arguably had killed American Airmen.
I picture the American people voting in a Democratic Congress because they are afraid to fight for freedom in Iraq.
Home of the Brave, Land of the Free? I picture not for long if the Democrats get their way.

The veterans in my family, the people who have died over the past 230+ years, and how proud I am to be a part of this country.
Edit: Luisa - the Greatest Generation was the WWII generation, both of my grandfathers served in it. As did many Native Americans. The Navajo contributions were invaluable!

I also think of the countless others who lie resting in various cemetery's and countless battle fields through out the world and even here.
I think of that big beautiful RED, WHITE, BLUE being raised every morning by its color guard as Colors plays, service members standing fixed and motionless as perfect statutes rendering a salute at attention.
I think of all the freedoms that we have everyday like this one right now, we can one and all, say basically what ever we want, and broad cast it to millions with out some one beating down our door and taking us away.
But most of all I think of all the Brave Men and Women that went before us and paid the full measure, so we can have these freedoms and liberty's.
Freedom isn't free.

Yep, I think of the same things. I think people everywhere in the US can, and do (if they want to survive politically, anyway) relate such words to the actions and events brought about by our "Founding Fathers." Liberal, Conservative, blah blah blah; when they talk about their pride or patriotism for America, they usually go way back to the words and lyrics (an obvious choice considering the Declaration, the Constitution and its Bill of Rights) that came out of that great generation during our early history.
So yes, when I think home of the brave, and the land of the free, I think of those that bravely declared their freedom, and shed or risked blood for it, during that same period.

I think off all the brave people that have sacrifice there lives for us. I think of my grandfather and his brother that were in WWII and how one of them didn't come home from it. I think off all the great things our country has done to help others before ourselves (maybe not the greatest ideas but hell it happens) But most of all I think about my boyfriend who serves in the NAVY and how proud of him I am. To know that the one I love puts everything on the line everyday of the year to help protect a country that he loves. It brings about a great sense of pride...
I also think of Sept. 11th. There is no other country in the world that would come together like we did. There is no other country in the world that its people would lay aside everything just to help people they don't even know.
I look at pictures of Italy and France and think about how much I want to visit these places because they are so beautiful...but at the end of the day I will always want to come back home. Because I would never be able to live like this anywhere else.
God Bless our Troops...Bring them home safe.

I think of my brothers and sisters that are marching through the sand everyday, risking their lives so that mine and my childrens are free. I think of the countless men and women that pass me everyday with their heads held high because they know the true meaning of what it is to be an American. I think of the lives that have been lost fighting in today and yesterdays wars, regardless of what their opinions were about the battle at hand, those men and women were proud spill their blood for America's honor.

I totally agree with Brad B. I like "land of the free because of the brave" way better. I also agree about the whole stupid democrat thing. If we didn't keep sending troups over there, they'll start attacking us. We're keeping them busy so they don't come over here and kill even more people.
I agree with snowwebster 2. (but I don't understand why he said the protesting at funerals thing. explain why you said that. I'm confused. I agree with everything else)

i think about how corrupt our govt is becoming. i think about the visions that our founding fathers had over 200 years ago for this to be a great country. i think about how and why us Americans have elected gw into office twice and how he is slowly but surely taking our rights away. i think about weather my kids and their kids will be free when they grow up and how china and all the other European countries are going to be the world leaders and we, America are going to be like Mexico. Now you see its funny isn't it? its funny how such a simple idea gets twisted around and becomes the America today. such few words " land of the free'' ''home of the brave" used to stand for well what it says now it stands for all of the above.

Me, my responsibilities, free speech, our republic (not a democracy, just democratic principles).
I love it. Patriotism is coming back. Even for those of us democrats who patriotically disagree with policies but know how to do so without being seditious about it.
America-hating is out.
