A very long tape measure? Just kidding. On some highways/ freeways they have "mile markers". If you are driving at 60 MPH it should take exactly one minute to drive from one mile marker to the next as you are driving exactly one mile.

On the edge of the freeway are mile markers or mileposts. They should be fairly accurate, and are useful for calibrating your speedometer (drive indicated 60 and see if it really takes 60 seconds) etc.

Most states are numbering their freeway exits to correspond to the milepost of the freeway, so "exit 39" is near milepost 39. Makes it real easy to tell the distance between exit 14 and exit 61!

Just use your odometer or mile markers or whatever their called or go 60 miles per hour and you will go 1 mile in 1 min.

On most major HWY they have mile markers and depending on which way your driving they either count up or down. Your odometer is a good way of knowing as well.

Y'a know... When I went to school, a mile a minute was 60 MPH, not 55!
