A volunteer military (which is the system the U.S. uses) means that joining the military isn't mandatory. Many countries use compulsary military service in order to maintain a viable military for defense. Citizens, and in some countries residents of that country must obligate 2 to 4 years military service at age 18.

It means we are in the armed forces by choice and not forced into it because some one had a gun to our head.
It means that everyone that singes the contract and then backs out or gos UA, is a anti-American communist, who should be shoot for not up holding the oath we all swore to up hold.
It means we made a conscious decision to give up our rights and freedoms to defend yours.

It means that Congress and the President can no longer force parents to give up their children at age 18 to build an Army et al. for the purpose of trading the lives of their children for additional power and wealth allotted to "the richest 1% of the world's elite".
Much as I piety President Nixon's legacy ~~~ ending the draft is one thing he did do right!!! ...and we do thank you for that, sir.
