Why in hell can't the Army do it if the Marines can. They are the same kind of men; why can't they be like Marines.
Gen. John J. "Black Jack" Pershing, USA; 12 February 1918

The Marine Corps has just been called by the New York Times, 'The elite of this country.' I think it is the elite of the world.
Admiral William Halsey, U.S. Navy

The American Marines have it [pride], and benefit from it. They are tough, cocky, sure of themselves and their buddies. They can fight and they know it.

Yes, and they are in the process of doing so right now. Some jobs that were formerly essentially the same job in all 4 branches (like the medical career field) are beginning to merge into one "Military Medical" career, encompassing all 4 branches. It is a slow process, but nevertheless, it is coming... It's too expensive for the US to keep giving money to all the separate branches and bases all over the place. It will be more cost effective to have the same job done in just one branch as opposed to all of the branches.

In a way, they already do. The militery branches are seperate but at the same time, they are under the same chain-of-command. These branches are also coordinated by a central command center.

Without this central command, any military action will be chaotic at the very least. Each branch wouldn't know what the other is doing.

No. After all, it was only 60 years ago that the Air Force became a separate branch of the service, and the reasons for doing it apply now more than ever.

I don't think a merger will ever happen.

Yes, it's in the works right now for two of the branches. The move is still years down the road...

When we have first contact around the 21st century and after that, they will merge to make up the United Federation of Planets.

No, they have different missions and different equipment. You have to specialize pretty specifically to stay up on the technology as it is. I expect there might be a further split in ground forces between high-intensity and low-intensity combat troops within the next 50 years or so.

since each one has its own specific function and area of land/sea/water to protect it would be too expensive to train everyone to do everything -so- no...a national militia wouldn't work for a "superpower" like America
