How do I know if my budgie is depressed? We have another keet that he's been around quite a bit but I've brought my bird to college now. I've only had him for about a month and a half, but he's been with the other bird quite a bit of that. He just hasn't been happy the past few days, he doesn't chirp or play, he just sits and hardly eats. What should I do?

Hi there. Sorry for your troubles. He may need a vet (avian if possible) given such a small body mass, starvation and dehydration can happen really fast. Cut him some fresh apple to try to ward off dehydration. Offer him a nutritional boost in the mean time. Chopped hard cooked egg will give him nutrients he needs if it isn't too late. If he starts to perk up, switch to a pellet food, fruits and veggies 10-20% and limit seeds to 10%. All seed diets lead to malnutrition. Over the counter tonics are not regulated and are of no real value, unless recommended by an avian vet which I doubt.. Keep him away from drafts. They can be very subtle even coming from a heating and cooling vent. You can rig a heating pad to one side and set it on low. Hang in there, and even if you can't see an avian vet, know that you did the best you could given your circumstances. May things work out. Let us know how it goes.

I'm thinking that he might be sick. Are his eyes as bright and lovely as the other keet?
Is the other keet that you have starting to act a little 'off' too?
If he's not eating then there is definately something wrong and you really should take him to the Birdie Dr.
Good luck..

you mite wont to see if he has got sick from the other bids, the other birds may not look sick but they may just be the Caria's i only think that is because i had a bird a few years ago that showed the same symptoms, it came from some one in the newspaper and apparently it was around a lot of birds, or the bird might be in the cage to long or wonts to spend more time with you

Any time a bird stops eating or playing, there's something really wrong with it. You need to take him to the vet right away. He's not just sad, he's sick.

He sounds very sick. Take him to an avian vet ASAP. By the time they show us that they are sick, they are VERY sick!!!
