Well you can do several things, first you can paint it as you already know. You can also purchase prefinished 1/4 inch dry wall. This just simply staples into place and has small strips that hide the joints. It comes in a variety of designs and colors. If you can read a tape measure you can put this up on your own. In addition it is very light weight and it gives a nice finished look when done. I'm not sure where it would be available in your area, but i get it from the local home improvement outlet. Good luck. P.S. do not try to putty or mud in the spaces between the finished areas as it will crack out within a few months. best bet is to do it right.

Take it down. Paint it. Put wallpaper over it. Take it down and turn it sideways, it looks rustic.
