How can I make my locs curly and crinkly?

My mom washes her locks and while they're still wet, braid them (like 4-5 locks in a braid) and then twist them around a piece of paper (like paper bags, or better yet rods or rollers) and then tie your hair up and go to sleep, lol. the next day they should be curly and crinkly.

use curling balm or leave in conditioner, and scrunch it... then finish with either stong hold gel or hairspray.
