Has anyone noticed a pattern and/or "attitude" when kitty yawns? Example, when I compliment kitty, (beautiful girl, pretty girl, etc.), she follows with a big pink yawn, & squeezes her eyes as if she's either embarrassed, or already knows it. I've never seen her yawn at any other time. I'd enjoy hearing your experience (if any) with this, or any other "idiosyncrasies" you might want to share. Cat "stories" are the greatest! (If anyone feels compelled to say anything nasty about cats, I will be on them like ugly on an ape--sorry this was necessary.) Thank you & cheers...

Well gosh--some fun answers so far! oneafter, I do NOT agree. My cat understands dozens of full sentences, & we have long dialogues in both languages. Prehaps you haven't "bonded."

onlaska--NOT my cat! She never, ever yawns unles I compliment her.

I love The reas.."put a fingertip in her mouth"--really cute! & yes, yawning is so very contagious..

kathlynn--falling off the TV! I once knew a cat who was, well, a bit on the arrogant side? He was sunning on the roof, rolled over & fell off. Now, if he wasn't embarrassed, I don't know what embarrassment means! He put his head & tail straight up & sauntered off as if--well, that is exactly what I WANTED to do!

Mon Ray--Yes, felines can find our attempts at play rather absurd, & sometimes they are! Have you seen the TV add where the guy is swishing a string & the cat just stares at him, like DUH?

mandy--I'm sorry, but seems lots of people are adding things like this, although it doesn't stop anyone (perhaps it invites them)! I won't do it again.

blossom--I also read that it means a "smile." I guess the total body language & circumstances tell us..

deep blu--this is so cute! She stuck her paw in your mouth! I LOVE it! I hoped I'd asked a question, (I think I've only asked 2!) that people could relate to. I love "Cat" people! Have any of you read the "The Cat who..." books? very charming & a pleasant read when you're sick of controversy or profound thoughts!

nikki_06~I think the looking in the eyes is threatening only between cats. My cat & I do this all the time for fun, to see who blinks first. Usually me, but if not, she just comes over & touches my nose with hers.

My cat just yawns when she's stretching n stuff. But obviously thats just because different cats, different personalities. Like my bird streches and shows off her wings when i talk to her - like look at me aren't i pretty.

Cats do understand words, i say hung-gee when i feed my cat. I'll say the word to her and she'll start following me.

Cattie will reach up with her nose and sniff my nose if i look at her. It's like a greeting, and its very cute.

We play tiggy. I'll run up and push her over, she'll run after me and scratch me and run off, n then i'll run after her and push her, n then she'll chase back after me.

Love'n the cats!!

n i yawned once while she was watching and she stuck her paw in my mouth.

My kitties yawns are the funniest, somehow she manages to yawn while we are playing with her, it's funny because she wants to bite the toy and yawn at the same time, it's hillarious, she tries to stop her yawn just like a human being, you know like when you want to stop yawning when you already are?. When she is relaxed and yawns she opens her mouth completely and my husband puts a fingertip in her mouth and she desperately tries to stop her yawn so she can catch hubby, she loves chewing fingertips. The whole fighting the yawn is hillarious.

Oh and have you yawned while your cat is watching?, it's contagious, in my little family if I yawn my husband does it and then the cat, sometimes it starts with the cat!

Blinking and yawning in both the cat and dog worlds are calming signals, she is letting you know she's no threat to you. When approaching an animal, if you copy these actions, it will help the cat to trust you. Looking a cat in the eye without blinking is considered a threat.

My kitty only yawns when he's tired or if he just woke up. I still can't tell if he understands any words yet... but the weird thing is when "I" yawn while holding him, he instantly relaxes. His entire body loosens up and he closes his eyes. This happens every time and he's normally a very skittish rascal. Something about my yawning makes him feel safe I think?

I think cats are horible nasty creatures!

Wait, no... I lied. But only because you said that I shouldn't say something like that.

My cat once jumped into a full bath-tub with out realising it. Another one of our cats got locked in the running shower-box by my dad, and cleared the 6 1/2' door thingy. Another time, when I was young and easily entertained, my mom's friend's son and I got in the hall with the cat and a remote control car, and closed the door behind us. She was litteraly bouncing off the walls and completely staying off the floor. In hindsight, it was very mean of us.

Your story's awfull cute, though.

My tabby cat yawns when I talk sweet to her. I think it's a conditioning at the sound of a voice that they are content with. I read in a cat body language book, that the "squeezing of the eyes closed" is their way of saying "I love You"...

Its a classic conditioning of psychology, cat does not understand our language, just the sound. The more you repeat, the more the car will be conditioned to respond automatically.

the first time i got a roomba, my cat used to run from it. then, she figured that when she jumps over it, it goes into the wall and bounces off. now, she just sits on my couch when its on and looks at it in a really disdainful way...like its stupid. then she gets bored, yawns and falls asleep :)

it easily relies upon on peronsal selection and the existence-style of the owner. additionally, the age and breed of the puppy is likewise substantial. they are the two large companions. Me working example, I easily have 2 German Shepards. i admire huge canine. i admire throwing frisbee, taking them to the sea coast, strolling with them and wrestling. i does not have an interest in having a lap canine.

I guess it's the cat's way of saying that she is not threatened by you and is feeling pretty good.
