That's a really good question. I got my lip pierced three years ago and my gums haven't been affected by it, but I haven't worn it much the last year and a half because it hurts my teeth. Wearing away at the enamel. If I wore it all the time, I could definatly see that happening.

They can.
Proper placement and jewelry can minimize the risks of gum erosion/tooth damage, but can never completely remove the risk. Many people get lip/labret piercings and have no problems, but there is always the chance. You can also get softer jewelry materials/backs for the jewelry which should help with tooth damage (gum erosion is caused by the friction and pressure of a piercing).
Your artist should be able to place the piercing so that it doesn't rub against your gums.

I think it depends on the location of the piercing and how your mouth is formed. If your lower lip is already low in comparasion to your gum line, I'd avoid it. However, there was no way that my lip ring could touch my gum line unless I manually did it. Don't forget that a lip ring can crack/chip teeth also.
I had my lip done and had no problems with it at all. Like I said, my ring couldn't touch my gum line, but I did have a few smacks to my teeth that worried me. Nevertheless, it has been my favorite piercing and the one I miss the most.

to put it simply, yes. the longer you have your oral piercing (lip, labret, tongue, monroe, etc.), the more erosion it will cause. thats why most people dont have oral piercings longer than, say, a few years. the ring(s) constantly wear away at the gum, making it recede further and further (there have even been rare, but factual cases of teeth falling out because there was not enough gum left to hold them.) oral piercings can also damage your teeth, slowing causing little chips and on occassion, you get punched or fall on your face and the metal chips away a large chunk of tooth.
im in no way putting down oral piercings (i myself have a labret), just making you aware of the health hazards you should know before getting one.

Lip piercings can cause erosions. To be on the safe side, don't get the piercing!

Yeah, they can do. I'm not sure on exactly how many cases this applies to, but I've seen some pretty nasty pictures of what a lip piercing has done to people's gums.

they definitely can, so can tongue piercings. when i had my tongue pierced it pushed my gums back and i didn't even know it. i took it out three years ago and it still hasn't completely healed yet. definitely keep an eye on it because it would really suck to lose your teeth just because of a piercing.

Lip piercings can make a few problems with the teeth for sure. And, of course the gums.
If you are concerned you should get to see your dentist. Of course he will tell you to remove your oral piercings for the good of your teeth. My piercer would not do my tongue or my lip!
I am losing my teeth one by one due to age. Hold on to yours as long as you can. No piercing is worth it.
