Dual booting is perfectly safe. When you dual boot, you choose at startup which OS you wish to use. So, no matter how many Windows OS installations you have, your only running one at a time.

Remember, in order to dual boot you MUST install the OLDER operating system FIRST. Install XP, then install Vista. If you have already installed Vista you must reformat in order to install XP.

It should work fine.. I know a lot of people who are using this approach since Vista is still new, and XP Pro has proved it's still more reliable than Vista..

But the hassle would be keeping up with your files between the two operating systems..
