There was a huge riot in September 1971, with several people killed. Many attribute the riot to the racial issue's inside of the person at the time. Of 2225 inmates in a facility built for 1200, 54% was African American and 9% Puerto Rican; however, all of the 383 correctional officers was white.
From reports of the prison conditions, the guards where openly racist and assaulted the prisoner's with their baton's.
The Attica Prison is still open and is located between Rochester and Buffalo New York. One of the well know inmates there is David Berkowitz, better know as "Son of Sam" and Mark David Chapman who assassinated "John Lennon"and also Kendall Francois who raped and strangled at least 8 prostitutes in the Poughkeepsie area in the late 1990's.

Attica is open and welcoming new residents. Wanna stop by for an extended stay? Thought not.

I found nothing in my research that says they are closed, and I remember seeing a CourtTV episode about that one not too long ago....so I believe they are still open.

They did close down for 50 years after the huge prison riot that killed 30 some people, 7 officers and 30 inmates (approximately) but they re-opened after all the lawsuits and criminal cases had concluded.
