Contrary to the misinformation provided by other posters, the DMV is not a branch of the State Police and the only information they have access to are driver's license and motor vehicle registration files. Warrants and other criminal information is kept on an entirely different computer system which requires a certified operator from a law enforcement or public safety agency such as 9-1-1 to access. In short, no they do not check you for warrants.

It likely depends on the state.

In California the DMV does not check for warrants on driver's license applicants. However, subjects listed as wanted or missing in NCIC are often flagged by the California Department of Justice if there is any activity on their license status by DMV. The DOJ will then notify the appropriate law enforcement agency.

As the DMV's are usually a branch of the State Police, they sure do check for warrants, and unpaid tickets, and licenses taken away by other states!
