If the account has not been charged off, you might call them and explain your situation and request that they reopen it upon full payment.

If the account has been charged off - they will not even consider reopening it.

Upon opening most cards they ask you if you want to take a protection plan that covers you in case you are hospitalized or loose your job and other things like that. Call your card and see if you took that insurance when you opened it. If you did your in luck, you will still have to pay them, but they will deduct all of the finance charged that was accrued while you were in the hospital. If you didn't then I can only suggest that every month you pay them something even if it is a small payment. This way they can't send you to collections.
Good Luck!!!

Call the companies customer service number. It should be on the card. If you let the account go into default it will take forever and a day to get your credit rating back up.

You need to call the company and explain your situation. they might be able to keep your account open. More often than not though, they feel you are to a risk and will close it.
