...why does a post mortem still have to be carried out? For example if someone has a bullet in their forehead.

I would hate the idea of being postmortemed. Can any one write in their will that they don't want to be??

How's this for a reverse-CSI plot? A person is poisoned. The murderer tells the person about the agonizing death that is about to ensue. The pain becomes unbearable, and the murderer leaves a revolver in the room. The deceased is found with a bullet hole in the head. Nobody alive, except for the murderer, knows about the poison, and it goes on the books as a suicide. Truth being stranger than fiction, this kind of thing happened so often when there were no such laws that the laws had to be passed. An autopsy is not so grisly as you might imagine, and if you come to an untimely end, you'll be past caring (sorry). You can't opt out if it's legally necessary.

As far as I`m aware the only time a post mortem isn`t carried out is if the person died of a terminal illness and was under the care of a Doctor around the time of death. As for the bullet in the head a post mortem would be carried out to establish if it was suicide or foul play.

The person may have already been dead when shot in the head, thus the cause of death would not be the bullet wound. Yes, you can refuse a postmortem exam for religious reasons, but a judge may over rule that if the death looks like murder.

You won't know anyway. :) So don't worry.

Not your decision, that one belongs to the Coroner. The reason for an autopsy or post mortem is to establish the exact cause of death, even if it can sometimes be obvious, there may be other discoveries that may help to understand the cause of death or to help the world of medicine.
Try not to die too young and then maybe your corpse may not have to endure dissection.

You assume that the bullet killed them. Have you never watched Morse,Frost or any TV detective series.

What looks obvious is not always the case.
