Dry ice is frozen carbon dioxide. A block of dry ice has a surface temperature of -109.3 degrees Fahrenheit (-78.5 degrees C). Dry ice also has the very nice feature of sublimation -- as it breaks down, it turns directly into carbon dioxide gas rather than a liquid. The super-cold temperature and the sublimation feature make dry ice great for refrigeration.

To make dry ice, you start with a high-pressure container full of liquid carbon dioxide. When you release the liquid carbon dioxide from the tank, the expansion of the liquid and the high-speed evaporation of carbon dioxide gas cools the remainder of the liquid down to the freezing point, where it turns directly into a solid. If you have ever seen a carbon-dioxide fire extinguisher in action, you have seen this carbon-dioxide snow form in the nozzle. You compress the carbon-dioxide snow to create a block of dry ice.

dry ice is solid carbon dioxide. I do not know how to make a dry ice bomb, but I suspect it involves making the dry ice go from its solid state into a gaseous state rapidly. Dry ice is available at Albertson's stores.

Dry Ice Bomb? I had no idea. I read the above answers. You youngsters always amaze me. We would spray lighter fluid on the ceiling of our dorm room and light it as we listened to Pink Floyd's Ummagumma Oh Wow!.

dry ice is the gas carbon dioxide expressed as CO2, when compressed and chilled savagely it forms a solid. it is far far colder than water ice. as it melts it becomes gaseous again, this is why it forms a low hanging cloud of vapor. when it is allowed to warm in an enclosed space (like a 2 liter bottle) it expands dramaticly untill the vessle bursts, this is a CO2 bomb. it is safe to use as a chilling agent in well venilated areas, its main benifits are its very low temp and lack of water runoff as it melts.
