I understand how you feel. It sounds like a disorder called dermatillomania. I have it, too. I pick my face and arms the worst.
Have you ever heard of trichotillomania? That causes people to pull out their hair. It's the same thing, except for skin.
You could try cognitive behavioral therapy, though I haven't really tried it.
Don't feel like it's your fault. Don't listen to anyone who tries to make you feel bad about it.
If you have any questions, feel free to contact me.

Ouch !! You poor thing, that sounds really painfull !!
The answer is that you have a vitamin B2 (Riboflavin) deficiency, that's why the skin is splitting and cracking around your fingernails in the first place. If you eat more foods rich in this vitamin, the skin around your fingernails will heal and you won't want to pick at them anymore !! Too easy hey !!
Other symptoms of B2 deficiency are sore lips, mouth and tongue, grainy and sandy feeling eyes.
All these symptoms can be relieved by getting the right amount of B2 each day.
The recommended daily intake for B2 is 1.2 - 1.7mg.
Foods rich in B2 are milk, liver, kidney, cheese, leafy green vegies, fish, eggs, yoghurt and beans.
Most likely then you are also suffering from a B12 deficiency. Have you been under added stress lately? I'd say so, stressfull situations mean that we need to increase our intake of the B Vitamin complex.
You also need to increase your intake of foods rich in B12. ie.: yeast, liver, eggs, milk, cheese and fish, kidney and pork.
Recommended daily intake for adults is 2mcg. I suggest you go to the chemist and ask the pharmacist to recommend a good quality brand of multi B complex supplement for you to buy. This supplement will include all the B vitamins, including B12 and B2.
For B12 to be properly assimilated through the stomach it is necessary to be combined with calcium during absorption to adequately benefit the body. In the human diet B12 is supplied primarily by animal products, since plant products usually dont contain it.
Symptoms of B12 deficiency are dizziness, depression, chest pains, palpitations, head and hand sweats, headaches, migraines, impaired balance, moodines, irritability and inability to concentrate.
All these symptoms will be alleviated when you are getting the right amount of B12 each day !!
If you are a vegetarian and have excluded eggs and dairy products from your diet, then you need vitamin B complex supplementation. If you keep regular "Happy Hours" and drink a lot, a B supplement is an important supplement for. Heavy protein consumers also need extra amounts of these vitamins. The B vitamins work best synergistically with all the other B vitamins hence my advice to get yourself a B complex vitamin supplement.
So ??? Wot are you waiting for ??? Get cracking boy, at the very least you should go get yourself a good quality multi B complex supplement. Oh, and don't buy synthetic vitamins (the real cheapies) they're way too hard to digest ........... :0)
Go go go ................. :0)
PEACE & LIGHT

Substitute one obsessive-compulsive behavior for another. If you can get that sort of greasy lip balm stuff that comes in a little tub and rub it into your cuticles whenever the urge to pick comes on, you will develop a new and less destructive compulsion. When your cuticles are nice and soft after using this for a while, you can add pushing back the cuticles to your ritual. It will keep the cuticles off of the fingernail where it is less likely to get dry and cracked and.....tempting.
