You will wear it 24 hours a day for month. Then you'll go down to night only, then you'll go to so many nights a week.
I worked in an orthodontists office for ten years. Some people never get to go more than wearing every night.
If you leave it out for two days and try it in, it fits fine no tight spots then you go two days without. All of your life, I suggest wearing it every Sunday night. I have seen teeth move back after the braces were off for twenty years and no movement. The patients were horrified at the thought of braces again, I have seen other teenagers loose their retainer right off the bat, were afraid to tell any one and all their teeth sifted. No one knows what your retaining needs are. SO- keep track of them, wear them even after they tell you don't have to anymore.. If you ever put them in and they feel tight- wear them all day until the soreness leaves, then nights, then every other night , then one night a week forever, until you don't care if they go crooked. Any dentists can make you a new retainer. Dogs and cats are attracted to them amd will chew them up. If you wrap them in a napkin at the lunch table, they are so light , some one will throw them away. Put them in a case in your pocket, or purse , or cargo pant, slide them down inside a tight fitting socket, anything but hidden on the table. Leave them in the bathroom, you need to brush them and brush your teeth anyway. Soak them in efferedent or polident to make them taste good again, do not leave in mouthwash= they will pick up the color. You can rinse them quickly in it, but do not leave them soaking in blue, or red, or orange.

Actually you might need to wear them for life. At least that is the latest trend in post orthodontic treatment, Your teeth won't fuse to the bone, there is a ligament between root and bone which changes and adapts to chewing forces, so even if you've worn your retainer for a year your teeth might still try to move back the way they were.

It depends on your teeth. I have been wearing mine for 5 years, and when I stop using it for a couple of weeks, my teeth still move. My dentist says that some people just have this problem, and others don't.
