Hi, you can take off the dummy at any stage you see fit. I took it off my son when he was 1.5yrs. I thought that was a good age because he could not really ask for it. He didnt try to ask for it either.

My sister in law's son had his dummy till 3.5yrs. I suggested she take all the dummies, put it in a basket and tell him that she is giving it to the fairies, as he is big boy now and no longer requires it.

Every child is different though, sometimes its easy to take the dummy away, sometimes its not. Just be persistent when you do decide to take it away. Make sure the grandparents are aware too, so that if you leave your child with them, they dont give it to him/her.

Good luck

Carla

First and foremost, the decision to do this is 100% up to you.
My son had a pacifier which we called a binky. He had it till he was a little over 2 years old. We could have done this sooner, but we got lazy and just let him have it. The reason you might not want your child on a pacifier to long is because of his teeth. Eventually the teeth will start to move because of the pressure of the pacifier. Kind of like braces. It will constantly push on his front teeth and possibly make them stick out a little. Other wise, you do this when you feel ready to. Don't ever make this decision because of what other people say. You know yourself and your child more than they do. You are the one who has to live with it, not them:)

Try weaning the bottle and the pacifier at the same time. I know the pacifier is not good for the teeth structure and should only be used to comfort occasionally. They should not develop a dependency on it. My cousin used her pacifier only while she slept, but used it until she was four and now has severe teeth problems. Her permanent teeth are bucked out and she was told by her dentist that it was due to the pacifier. Just be careful!

Why are we so obsessed with taking things away from babies that give them pleasure? As long as the kid doesn't live with the pacifier in his/her mouth round the clock it's not that big a deal. They will give it up when they are ready! My oldest gave his up at about 10 months. My second born had his taken from him at 3 months by his dad and is now a dedicated thumb sucker (something you can NEVER take away!!) and my youngest is 6 months and loves his pacifier, so he gets to keep it!

The younger they are at the time, the easier it will be to wean them off of it. I had experience with 2 kids on a pacifier...my oldest kept hers till she was almost 2, then it was a hair raising experience to get her to give it up. My son, I simply threw it away when he was about 11 months old. He barely missed it

The sooner the better. It's not very good for their teeth. I had a friend whose baby had a speech problem from being on the pacifier too long.

I agree, they should be about 2. But you can try to stop before that. My baby loves his pacifier, but I dont let him have it during the day. Start trying to wean the child off of it by just giving it to him/her at night.

My kids had them til they were three. They are all 15, 17, & 18. they all have jobs, and are on the honor roll. They will give it up, when the time is right for them. I would would begin to worry after age 4 1/2.
