Names of countries normally do not take a definite article - some do, like "The United States", but Latin America does not need one.
"Porque/por que" is "why" when it asks a question (including an indirect question) and "because" when it is a conjunction.
So for example - "Porque (é que) você bebe tanto?" "Porque estou com sede" - "why do you drink so much? Because I am thirsty".
"por quê" at the end of a phrase is always why. "Quero saber a razão por quê..." - I want to know the reason why.
