How do I get straight-but-curly spiral curls?

I sort of want it this way:
http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/P/B000GIW53Q.01._AA220_SCLZZZZZZZ_V64781109_.jpg

I try so hard! The first time I tried to get these curls, I first washed my hair, and then air dried it. Whenever I do that though, it gets all puffy. Then, I tried putting gel on it, then twisting it into little buns, but then that just made it look a mess.
Then i tried going under the dryer, and then it got puffy again.

It sort of looks like this:

I guess my main problem is that it keeps getting puffy, when all I want it to be is kind of like the straight spiral curl look.

Does anyone know what I should do or put in my hair? I dont want to put a weave in.... My hair is straight when I straighten it, puffy when I don't, medium when I blow dry it.

-Read the book and visit the site below about curly hair. I did and my once horrible curly hair is now virtually frizz-free ringlets. Now I get compliments on my hair all the time! Straighten your hair- be happy for a day, learn to manage your curly hair- be happy for life!
-The main philosophy of the curly-girl method is to not use shampoo. This may sound unhygenic but it has actually made my hair less oily and dandruffy. Shampoos contain some of the same chemicals found in laundry detergent. They dry out curly hair.
- Massaging of the scalp with conditioner to remove dirt is all that is needed. Then rinse and spread conditioner on the outside layer of hair and the hair at the nape of your neck. Gently comb tangles out with your fingers or a wide toothed comb and rinse. It is also important to use gel on wet hair in the shower to reduce volume and scrunch the hair. Then let your hair air dry or use a blowdryer with a diffuser.
- I really like the garnier fructis products. Aussie products works great too, but there are more conditioners, gels, etc. on the website.
-This takes 2 to 4 weeks begin working. This is hard to do if you don't read the book, or at least the website. Good luck!

Yeah, those of us with wavy to curly hair empathize.

The way I see it done on 'What Not to Wear' is putting the curl product on it then twisting each curl. You really need to watch when Nick does someones hair that's curly like yours.

Good luck. I thought the second picture looked good but I always want my wavy hair to lie flatter, too.

You could try straightening it then curling it and using hairspray while you are curling it. Thats what I do. Its not so good for your hair, but it works!
