Nationality, origin.... I think it was probably changed to Popovich eventually ???

ok, you get prize for headscratcher of the day. The above post on genforum seems to indicate an original spelling and that the name comes from Lithuania. Be sure to check the entire thread, since it shows other persons researching.
In order to be certain, you need to trace Catherine herself, and see if her documents show a place of birth.

ps I used the alternate spelling and come up with over 500 entries in google... bet it would work if I tried them in one of the translator pages, but thought I might leave some fun for you.

I agree its hard to find
although

I found 2 Papevis people (with this spelling) in the 1930 census and both list their birthplace as Lithuania. One was Frank Papevis who was in MacOupin County, Illinois and the other was Anicetas Papevis who was in Union County, New Jersey. Difficult to find as the same is rarely used in History.
