It is both. They go to fresh water to spawn (and die). Most of their life is spent in salt water. If you want a nice fresh water fish, get rainbow trout. It's a relative of salmon, but not quite as tasty. Most fish you buy at the fish market are salt water.

Hey! Salmon will spend some of their life in fresh water and some in salt so if you're allergic then I'm afraid salmon is no good for you unless it's specifically fresh water farmed salmon.

The answer to your question is "Yes"...
Many kinds of salmon live at sea (in salt water) but swim upstream to spawn in inland rivers (in fresh water).
You are probably allergic to something more specific than "salt water fish", that would be like being allergic to "brown foods"...

Farm raised are usually fresh water fish. However, if nature should take its course it is both, from fresh to salt water during spawning time.

Most salmon is mostly salt water but caught in estuaries or rivers upon return to where they spawn(ed), but there are landlocked salmon (in some lakes), too.
Have you gone all these many years without eating salmon to see if you are allergic to it?

Amazing how ignorant people are. Salmon are born in fresh water, migrate to the ocean where they mature. If they live through their ocean ordeal and mature long enough they migrate back to the freshwater stream where they were spawned to spawn themselves. After they spawn they die where they were born.

Typically, they are born in fresh water, migrate to the ocean, then return to fresh water to reproduce.
