My brother and his 19-year-old son are astonishingly alike in personality, ideosyncracies, sense of humor, skepticism, and--to a lesser extent, in interests. The striking thing is that, due to a custody dispute, they hadn't seen each other since my nephew was 5! Since they reunited, they've really taken to each other, like glue. The bulk of my nephew's personality seems to be genetic.
It's not completely genetic, though. I and some of my siblings--including my brother--inherited a cynical streak from our dad. Amid all the personality traits my nephew shares with his dad, cynicism is completely absent. Of course, this is all anecdotal and doesn't prove anything. The cynical streak could be either a recessive trait or learned behavior.

This is why it's important for all children to know both parents, so they don't have to carry around the guilt of thinking that they are bad, defective, insufficient, incapable, etc.
When they see a characteristic in their parents, they realize why they are the way they are, and are liberated from the guilt and/or responsibility for those not-so-great characteristics.
My kid is the exception, of course, he started out pretty rough, but he turned out a whole lot better than me or his mother.
For this I am truly grateful.

I think it's because of the close relationship. We see our parents doing these things constantly, and we subconsciously start copying them. Adopted children tend to pick up their adoptive parents idiosyncrasies too.

Oh yes.
Us three have inherited our mother's ability to smile most of the time and to stay calm.
We've inherited Dad's no nonsense approach to life, his sense of ... humour (and Mam's which is a diabolical combination) (we're considered ... weird. Why, I don't know) and his all-abiding respect for learning.

Same here! I thought I wouldn't grow up to be like my parents but I've already found myself doing a bunch of things my father does. It truly is frightening.

If you are not guided and protected by the Holy Spirit you will become what is familiar to you. We can learn from our ancestors but we have to find out who we are in service to God and remain the unique individuals He created us to be.
