AM stands for Amplitude Modulation and FM stands for Frequency Modification. Imagine being at a beach and watching the waves come in. They come at the same rate, but they get taller, then shorter, then tall again. That is amplitude. The heighth of the wave. Now, the waves are the same size, but they slow down. The waves crash against the shore slower. Then, they speed up, and slow back down. They have the same amplitude, just a different frequency. Frequency is the amount of time it takes to go from one point on one wave to the same point on the next consecutive wave.
Does that make any sence? AM changes heighth, FM changes "speed".

In addition to the technical details
AM radio is mono only
FM is stereo
FM is more robust to noise and interference
