I always use A Quote insurance and have found them cheap. It seems so unfair that a newly qualified driver should be penalised. There are several things you can do.
Buy a car in a smaller insurance bracket. Put your son through the Advanced Driving Test, this will reduce your premiums. Restrict the number of miles you do and avoid driving at night, probably not very practical with an elderly mother.
£260 a year on your insurance is not too steep and after the first year it should reduce.

250 per month? That's far too much!
Two years ago (my son was then also only 17), my leg was broken.
I couldn't possibly think of driving for the next 5 months...
Back then I also believed that there's no cheap insurance for young drivers.
But I was wrong, luckily my neighbors knew it better.
You can check out this site here, though for reviews and recommendations! :)

Be hassle-free. might you insure a male driving force, under 21, to rigidity a automobile in the united kingdom? automobile coverage corporation's have many some years adventure of insuring drivers of each and every age. They understand from their adventure that male drivers, under 21 are 4 circumstances extra possibly to have an twist of destiny than those over 21. Now this is the solid one, their twist of destiny claims are ten circumstances the final. undergo in concepts that's threat. the automobile would not count, all of them can do 70mph in the united kingdom. i might wager, in case you ought to get a corporation, that the annual top rate ought to be as little(!) as £800 or £950 a 300 and sixty 5 days. think of carefully, whether you ought to get that kind of money is this smart?

Make a deal with him... tell him he can use the car if he pays for his own insurance... We did that with our 17 year old son, so he was forced to go out and get an after school job... he now pays us for his insurance... he has his own car... the idea of a job scared him at first... but he has now learned responsibility... something every kid his age needs to succeed in life !

DO NOT ASK FOR A QUOTE TO ADD THE KID TO YOUR POLICY!!! IF THE COMPANY FINDS OUT THERE IS A KID, THEY WILL JACK YOUR RATES EVEN IF HES NOT ON THE POLICY... They call it "automatic family protection contract" or something like that... translation being if theres a kid in the house and they get hint of it, they're gonna rape you.
I did a "what if" quote to add a kid onto my policy and they automatically added him to it under a family protection thing. So Im left to go find a different company and keep my mouth shut. STAY AWAY FROM GEICO... THEY ARE THE ONES WHO RAPED ME of my $. PROGRESSIVE RAPES EVERYONE TOO!
