Which ever one you decide on, it has to be able to accept programs which are generated from CAD drawings. The cnc controller should have that capability. The computer is only as good as the part data you put into it. The greater the customer base the greater the probability that someone else has already worked out the details.

Previous answer is useless and generic. CNC machines always accept programs from a design system, does he think people type in the programs by hand?

So you are looking for a light weight system? My brother used to be the accountant for a steel stockholder in Stockton who would burn profile for you from 4" thick plate. You are probably looking for something no more than 5mm?

Ah, take a look at the link below, it sounds like they do the same sort of thing as you and they list their equipment is listed too. Looks like they design in AutoCAD and some of their equipment. The cutter they use costs around 3700 quid plus VAT, but that's a 415v unit, for light work and starting out you might half that cost. Since the CNC system seems to be a separate part you could upgrade later. You are going to need to source the CNC system and the water table separately, by the looks of things.

Talk to the companies in the third link, just tell them what you want and ask for proposals, they'll be only too pleased. As an engineer in the UK defense industry I used to spend a lot of time doing that and my experience was that people love to help.

Have a word with this lot, they are just about 25 miles up the A1 from you, Dudley is just near the A19/A1 junction north of Newcastle.

Would water cutting work for you? (edited) I though water jet was only good for an inch or so, but they say they can do 100mm hard and 200mm soft material.

Good luck.

One final thing, sign up for some trade magazines, they are almost bound to have an annual show somewhere like the NEC, that will give you a chance to go along and check out equipment that is in the right sort of scale for you.
