It allows the flow through arteries to be seen. Velocity is proportional to area. So if the injected dye starts moving fast in an area I guess that would mean a blockage. This is the same reason if u put ur finger over the hose nozzle water shoots further. The same amount of blood has to get through an opening so a smaller opening means faster flow. This would just be my guess. But im pretty sure it has to do w/ fluid mechanics. Hopefully Ive helped.

A radio opaque dye when injected into an artery , and x-ray pictures are taken the blood vessels,their diameters,anatomy and blocks are picturised.
