I'm looking mostly in the area of Ithaca and Watkins Glen, but any recommendations would be appreciated. We're planning on doing a weekend there in May.

You should have no problem in getting to any of the Finger Lakes wineries. I've been there a few times and there are some excellent wines being made there and some fun wineries to go to.

And it is a region that is changing fast, new wineries pop up, old ones produce new wines.

I suggest you do some internet research before you go, and grab a copy of the Finger Lakes Wine newspaper as soon as you get there to see if there are any special events at the wineries during the weekend you are there -- special wine tastings, meet the winemaker etc, because you'll probably want to include them.

And you may like to read my report of my visit there where I visited most of the wineries -- it is at http://www.wineloverspage.com/reports/ny2003.phtml and my recommendataions for wineries to visit (at the foot of that report) are

Must Visit Wineries

Bully Hill - for its exuberance, interesting unashamed hybrids, restaurant, lake view and museum.

McGregor Vineyards - for its welcome, seated tastings and interesting varieties.

Dr Frank - for its quality vinifera wines, must try Rkatsitelli wine and great views over Lake Keuka.

Seneca Shore - for its friendly staff in mediaeval costumes, mediaeval music and range of wines.

Herman J Wiemer - the temple of serious Riesling - and good sparklers.

Attwater Estate - excellent sparkler, good wines friendly people.

Goose Watch - friendly pourers and well made hybrid based wines.

But even if you just drive along the road and call in at any winery you are sure to have a great time!

The Finger Lakes have some GREAT wineries. Most of my favorites are on Seneca Lake.
Hazlitt's (try the Red Cat and the Reserve Reisling)
Rasta Ranch (Try Whiter shades of pale)
Wagner
Shalestone (get there early...when they sale their quota they close the doors)
Poplar Ridge (try Pecker Head Red)
They are all on the East side of Seneca Lake and are a really fun time. Try the Micro Brewery at Wagner's too.
On the west side of the lake try
Glenora
Fox Run (they have a cute cafe there too.)
Anthony Road
On Keuka Lake go to Bully Hill, The Champagne room, and Dr. Frank's (love the Johannsburg Reisling).

If you are in Watkins Glen go to Gerlando's restuarant for AWESOME pizza and wings and in Ithaca go down to the commons and try Viva Taqoria for Mexican and DP Dough for killer calzones.

Have fun!! (God I miss the Finger Lakes)

My favorites were in Watkins Glen. My #1 is Glenora (great dessert wines!), and Lakewood Vineyards (their ice wine rocks!). Wagner (on the opposite side of Seneca lake) is really good too (my favorite there is their Niagra).
I'm so jealous!!! I can't wait to go back in July for the wine festival!

Ahh, my grandma is from Auburn near Owasco Lake I have family in Elmira and Rochester too. I think it is about the same these days. However no one will say anything if you give less. Some our guests gave us $20 or $25, we were very thankful for their gifts. It was more important to us that they did what they could to support our wedding by coming and/or helping us start our lives. To be quite frank, anyone who is upset about receiving any amount of money is simply a brat.

There are many and you can get a guide from New York State Wines (www.nywines.org).

Also, if you have the time, remember that you will be only 2 hours away from another fine wine growing area, VQA AOC Niagara Peninsula.
