I had a root canal about 3 years ago on a molar and the dentist never placed a crown on it. My original enamel was left around it. Well last week that enamel totally crushed when I was eating and broke. Now I just have little blackened enamel around the root canal pin in my gum and it is causing a ton of pain. It almost feels like the enamel broke off in my gum.

Has anyone else ever had this happen? My tooth is aching badly and tomorrow I have an appointment to go in to the dentist. I am scared about losing this tooth :(

It is very important to have a build-up and crown after a root canal. When a root canal is done the nerve and blood supply to the tooth is removed virtually leaving this tooth non-vital. It will be brittle and needs a build up (like a filling th support the crown) and a crown (typically made of porcelain on outside and gold inside for strength). It is almost inevitable that your tooth will break after a root canal at some point without a crown on that tooth.

Well, you may have had a leak in the filling which may have caused decay inside the tooth which is why it broke. If the decay is way down into the root of the tooth you may lose it. If there isn't decay the dentist may be able to build the tooth back up and do a crown on it. I can't see it so I am not sure which it is. If you do have to lose the tooth don't worry because a bridge may be able to be done. Ask your dentist all your options. Hope all goes well.
