Every single morning I wake up with severe neck pain and soreness. It radiates all the way from the base of my skull to my shoulders and on both sides. I have trouble turning my head to the left, right, up and down. I also have pain in the left side of my jaw every morning. My jaw sometimes clicks when I open it. I take up to 10 Ibuprofen to be able to function normally. What is this? How can I solve the problem?

You really need to go to the doctor to get help. As for the 10 Ibuprofen, you need to stop taking soo much. Even prescription strength is less than what you are taking. It is very dangerous to take so many. Go and see a doctor for treatment and they will give you something better for you to deal with the pain. It could be something like TMJ which is lockjaw, but it could just be the bed or pillows. Go to the docs, get some x rays and go from there. And stop taking so much ibuprofen you are destroying your stomach and it will lead to worse health problems.

I've had increasing pain in my neck and shoulders when I wake up and sleep much better without a pillow now. That might be something to try.

Start taking note of how you sleep (L side, R side etc.) that position could be causing certain muscles in your neck to be pulled tight all night. Then when you wake up those muscles are already worn out from being in that position.

Equally important is to look at the types of stress you are putting on your head and neck during the day. If you have started doing something new that could be why your neck is screaming every morning.

If you work at a desk or read a lot if you're a student can put a lot of stress on you neck if you are not moving around very much.

Try to some joint mobilization drills before you even raise up out of bed. This could be just slowly moving your neck L/R as far as you can without causing any pain.

So, you have to be aware of what your are feeling and once you start to feel any signs of pain then stop. That is the end of your current range of motion. Then go back the other way.

You might have to go back and forth slowly 10 or more times to gently release those neck muscles.

Try other movements the same way while you are in bed then try some sitting up.

Go slow or it will hurt and then you wont want to try it again.

Well first off, stop taking that much ibuprofen, it is really bad for the liver and kidneys. It sounds like muscle spasms, but the clicking jaw could also be the problem. I think you should be examined instead of trying to treat it at home. Heating pad, rice sock, massage, all of these will help with the neck pain. I've had two neck surgeries, and although my problems originated in my neck, it was actually my arm that had the pain, that's why I tend to think your problem is muscular in nature and not a bone or disc issue. Do you grind your teeth while you sleep, do you have alot of stress right now, these can cause your problem as well. Good luck, I hope you find the cause.

If it's that bad, then you really should see a doctor. Pain is a sure sign you have something wrong. Most likely it's a pinched nerve or a stretched muscle, but you should really see a doctor if you're in pain. If the pain is a strained muscle, don't take Tylenol...you need an anti-inflammatory, like Advil or Aspirin instead, and that will help alot. Tylenol is not an anti-inflammatory.
