In my highschool anatomy class today we tested our own urine and mine was all normal but i had lots of ketones. We learned that this can be caused by starvation, stress, and diabetes. So if ketones are caused by the burning of fats wrather than sugar for energy (im simplifying these terms) then wouldnt that mean that I am losing weight?? I do NOT have diabetes..im not really fat...and im not really overly stressed or anything...so wouldnt someone want ketones in their urine for the sake of losing weight if they know that they don't have other problems? I have been excersizing and watching what i eat lately.

I was on a ketogenic diet once and they toldme that if I had ketones in my urine I was burning fat. They tested me every week. The diet consisted of basically a low carb. dietSo if you have been watching your diet it is probably why your urine tested like it did.

Actually part of the Atkins diet is to test you urine for ketones to be sure you are burning fat. Just missing a meal will not cause it to happen. It usually take a day or so before your body will start burning fat to the point that you will have ketones in your urine. But you are right. It's another reason that you should drink alot of water when dieting....your kidneys are working hard to excrete the ketones.

NO! It is not normal that ketones are in your urine. It doesn't mean that you are "burning" fat just because it shows up in your urine. It is probably indicative of your crash dieting and/or unhealthy way of losing weight (starvation). You need to stop what you are doing because this can become very serious...PS the Atkins diet is not good...you will be in a bad mood from zero intake of carbs, bad breath, and you will end up gaining all the weight you lost plus some. Good luck!
