My daughter is already one of the most amazing young ladies I've ever known. God did a far greater job than anything my thoughts or desires could possible conceive, and for that I am truly grateful.

1. To think well enough of herself that she would never contemplate a relationship with someone who mistreats her.
2. To be able to earn her own living so that no matter what happens, financial circumstances don't force her to stay in a bad situation.
3. To understand that if she wants to be treated with respect, she must treat others with respect; if she expects compassion from others, she must be compassionate to others; and that she should never be expected to be treated better than she treats other people.
4. To find joy in life, even in unexpected places and things, and to never be ashamed to take joy in things that other people find silly or childish.
5. To not place herself above others because of material circumstances, either hers or theirs, and to understand that a philosophy of "he who dies with the most toys, wins" is in fact false.
6. To not expect perfection from herself, others, or from life, and not be disappointed at not finding it; but to expect herself and others to make the best efforts they can at the things that are important.
7. To know that to be loved for who you are is the greatest gift you can give or receive from someone, that true love is not conditional on someone else's expectations.
8. To never stop searching for knowledge and affirmation of values in life.
9. To be as tender with the dreams and hopes of others as she would like them to be with her dreams and hopes.
10. To understand that even when it seems like life is nothing but despair and disappointment, there will be compensations as long as we don't blind ourselves to them and refuse to accept them.
