I have an actual EMS jump kit in my truck. It has everything I need with the exception of an AED, oxygen tank, and IV fluids.
I plan to get an oxygen tank soon.
I have a large red medic bag that contains splints, wraps, rolled gauze, bandages, antiseptic ointments, benadryl, iodine, activated charcoal, a blood glucose meter, glucose gel, blood pressure cuffs in 4 sizes, a stethoscope, oral and nasal airway kits, trauma dressings, OB kit, burn kit, adult and pediatric BVMs, various tools (shears, window punch, bandage scissors), a roll of duct tape, a roll of saran wrap, a roll of aluminum foil, saline flush, eye cleanser, peroxide, spray-on bandage, 2 containers of sterile water, a bottle of baby aspirin and a whole host of other items.
I have another bag that contains adult and pediatric cervical collars and long splints with wraps and tape.
There is a third bag with car stuff that contains a flashlight, flares, jumper cables, fix-a-flat, 2 blankets and a pair of pantyhose.
Why do I carry all of this? I'm an EMT and I'm never off duty. Should I come across a situation where my help is needed, I will stop and render aid. Having all of these supplies means that I can effectively treat someone until an ambulance arrives.
Oh...I also have several different field guides and one most important item...a permanent marker.

** Add some plastic wrap to that list. It's indispensible for a multitude of things and especially for keeping wounds from getting infected by contaminated water and such. You can wrap right over exisiting bandaids, gauze.

Thinking about first aid is great, but what if it's worse. This comes from www.ready.gov It's a lot of stuff but if you were in or near Katrina... all of this is essential. I made one of these after I saw Spike Lee's - When the Levees Broke: A Requiem in Four Acts on HBO- You can place all of these things in a plastic storage bin. Be sure to "spring clean" them to keep things from becoming expired.
______
When preparing for a possible emergency situation, it's best to think first about the basics of survival: fresh water, food, clean air and warmth.
Recommended Items to Include in a Basic Emergency Supply Kit:
-Water, one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days, for drinking and sanitation
-Food, at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food
-Battery-powered or hand crank radio and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert and extra batteries for both
-Flashlight and extra batteries
-First aid kit (see below for contents)
-Whistle to signal for help
-Dust mask, to help filter contaminated air and plastic sheeting and duct tape to shelter-in-place
-Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation
-Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities
-Can opener for food (if kit contains canned food)
-Local maps
Additional Items to Consider Adding to an Emergency Supply Kit:
-Prescription medications and glasses
-Infant formula and diapers
-Pet food and extra water for your pet
-Important family documents such as copies of insurance policies, identification and bank account records in a waterproof, portable container
-Cash or traveler's checks and change
-Emergency reference material such as a first aid book or information from www.ready.gov
-Sleeping bag or warm blanket for each person. Consider additional bedding if you live in a cold-weather climate.
-Complete change of clothing including a long sleeved shirt, long pants and sturdy shoes. Consider additional clothing if you live in a cold-weather climate.
-Household chlorine bleach and medicine dropper – When diluted nine parts water to one part bleach, bleach can be used as a disinfectant. Or in an emergency, you can use it to treat water by using 16 drops of regular household liquid bleach per gallon of water. Do not use scented, color safe or bleaches with added cleaners.
-Fire Extinguisher
-Matches in a waterproof container
-Feminine supplies and personal hygiene items
-Mess kits, paper cups, plates and plastic utensils, paper towels
