my mum has just bought a gorgeous jack russell pup. she is eight weeks old and mum was advised by the breeder to purchase a crate which we have done. the breeder said to make room for a bed and toilet area. although i thought this sounded wrong i checked with a vet. i didn't think to ask how long she should be kept in there each time? could anybody who has experience in this please help. for those that don't agree with this method then i am sorry if i have offended you but am going ourely on what these two professionals have said. thanks in advance!

Crate training is a good way of speeding up house training and the dog has a safe place to retreat to.Both my dogs were crate trained as pups. You should always make it cosy with bedding etc and as for the toilet area you should lay paper down as obviously your mums pup wont be able to hold herself all night. We put blankets over the crate aswell to make it more cosy and so that it was more private for our dogs.Never use the crate as punishment and never leave them in any longer then 8 hrs apart from over night.Good luck.

We have a Yorkie puppy. First make sure the crate is large enough for you dog. Think about how long the dog going to be in the crate. For longer times think bigger crate, if it's just for night time think smaller. I put a pillow covered with a blanket in the back of the crate and put down paper(for toilet area) towards the front. Our dog only stays in it a night so I do not put any toys in just a "baby" to sleep with. I also don't keep food or water in the crate.
Just some things to think about. Hope it helps

Crate training can be useful as long as you do not use it to lock your puppy in when you've had enough or can't cope! They should in my opinion be used only as a sleeping area not a toilet. For hygiene reasons it's best to teach your dog to be clean indoors and do it's business outside! Back to the crate... they are a safe place for dogs if you're doing something where the dog needs to be out of the way, eg d.i.y.,or if puppy has had enough of all the attention and needs to get away from it all!

do NOT leave room for a "toilet area" the dog will learn to pee where she sleeps and will be impossible to house train. leave her in there for no more than 3 hours at a time (especially at night) and only when you leave the house or go to bed. I know of a couple who thought crate training was throwing the dog in a big cage when she got too playful and leaving her there 6-8 hours at a time. they have since give up the dog because she was too rambunctious when she got out of the crate. don't let this happen. e-mail me for more info. I've trained all of my dogs and many of my friends' dogs this way. I also foster puppies and crate train all of them. good luck =)

we crate trained our dogs.. the best thing is to make sure in the crate they have enough room to lay down and NOT be able to use the bathroom. generally dogs on use the bathroom where they sleep but if left in there long enough they might. we started out by leaving our dogs in there for a little while at a time. even if they cry and whine do not let them out.. and increase the time slowly so they get used to it. puppies shouldnt be in the crate very long either they cant hold it long like older dogs and might use the bathroom in the crate.
good luck

Crate trainning is a very smart thing to do.....well, at night for sure and when no one is around to watch the pup there really is no set time limit...make sure there is always fresh water.....and then leave the crate open even though the pup is not in there....feed and water the pup in the crate also....what happens is the crate becomes the pups safe haven.....

First off, DO NOT LET YOUR DOG GO TO THE BATHROOM IN HIS CAGE!!! Keep your new pup in the crate and take him outside to go to the bathroom about every 30-60 minutes. If he goes praise him with a treat and give him play time for maybe 5 min. Put him back in his cage. Repeat this methode. Try to take him out ot go to the bathroom in the same spot everytime. ( make sure thats the spot you want him to pee in the rest of his life!) This may take a while. Be patient with your pup. GOOD LUCK!☺

first off, dont give it room to do his business in the crate. the crate should be an area for the puppy to sleep in.

as for how long to keep the puppy in, go by the rule of thumb, if the puppy is 2 months old, then 2 hours it should be taken out of the crate and into the bathroom to relieve itself. only place the puppy in the crate for about 2-3 hours a day if you can not supervise them.

I personally would never train my dogs this way, it just seems kind of mean to me. Paper training works, and taking her out often should do the trick. Just praise her when she does her business outside. If you want to stick with the crate thing, I'd still let her out often so it's not like she's in prison, and play with her lots too. I've heard of what you mentioned a lot too so I guess it must work. In Dogs For Dummies the author uses crate training just for potty training. Since dogs don't like to mess in their "den" in teaches them to hold it while inside the house. Then as soon as you take her out of the crate, you would set her ouside, let her go, then bring her back in and there she'd be good for a while. I know puppies are so confusing when there are so many methods of training them, but good luck!

crate training is a good idea...i never uesed that method before but do now..first I don't think you should have a toilet area in the crate ...you should be sure your dog is exercised totally before you crate her .......... first i would suggest you put her in the crate for short periods while you are there ..don't talk to her .......don't give her treats as you let her out..GIVE HER TREATS when you put her in (but not too many) .........put a piece of her owners clothing and a toy in there ...try a kong ball with treats in it .......... leave a radio on ..... gradually work up to leaving her in the house alone but make it for short periods at first ...you can also feed her in the crate with the door open...the door should be open all the time........DON'T MAKE A FUSS ABOUT HER GOING IN THE CRATE............slow and easy goes this lesson..... also make a point of crating her when you are home so she doesn't associate the crate as mommy is leaving time...good luck ...don't give up ..i have an Aussie who had separation anxiety when I adopted her and she escaped from a metal crate 3 times ...she is ok in the crtae now so don't give up...
