The answer is that dogs sometimes pant just to keep cooled off.

When your body temperature gets too high, you sweat. Evaporation of water takes up a lot of heat. Evaporation of sweat from your skin helps cool your body when its temperature begins to get too high.

Dogs (and cats, too) are pretty well covered with hair and have very little bare skin. They can’t keep cool by sweating—except maybe a little from the pads of their feet. Instead, a dog pants. That moves air rapidly back and forth over the moist tissues of its mouth and tongue.

Why do dogs pant when they are not tired?

Panting is the dog’s way of evaporating extra water to help keep its body cool.

dogs pant because they are hot, they do not have sweat glands like us, so the only way they can cool down is to pant.

When their body is overheated, for example after running or in hot weather. Dogs dont sweat so they have to lose the heat some other way. Thats one of their ways of doing it.

Dogs don't have sweat glands, panting is how they get rid of body heat.

Because they don't sweat the way we do. Panting pushes air across their tongues and helps them cool off.
