It really kinda stupid. We call it the "chair force" and what not. Its like telling the "I had it harder" story...it is kinda irrelevant, but the Air Force often has it easier. Hell I personally think they are smart - why not live in a building vs a tent...seriously...are you a better soldier or marine for it. Why not put in a pool? Who wouldn't go for some aquatic PT.
The Air Force has some awesome power, but in an unconventional war it doesn't get the opportunity. If you've ever seen a tank destroyed or a bunker busted...you gain alot of respect for the Air Force.....but its a different respect that you give the guys that you serve with on the ground, baking in a tent, playing sandbox football, taking the incoming fire, and IEDs

You know what Heater, I wonder how far you would get out there without the Air Force. If you've ever been out to a FOB you would understand. They are the ones primarily supplying the troops out there with food, water, bullets, and whatever else you need to survive. Not to mention hualing you guys out when you bite off more than you can chew. The only Army or Marine personell that Ive seen who didnt appreciate us are the Newbies or the guys who have never seen combat.
I wonder how big and brave you would be to face an enemy the Airforce hasnt bombed first.
So to answer you're question Detroit, the reason we dont get respect is because of young new guys, who have never been in combat, who think they are hardcore, dont know anything they are talking about.

I whole-heartedly respect the Air Force. I have Air force friends. The reason they get a hard time is because they're not looked at as a "battle hardened" force. I understand that the Air force is a more technical branch of the military. The Air Force is the reason I can go home on leave.

The air force is limited in this war, so far, because of the limited number of fixed landing basis it needs to employ it's services. The distance air force planes must travel, to fill their assignments make it prohibitive to use these services.
Certainly, the air force isn't obsolete, yet! Down sizing or re-assignment of responsibility may be a consideration, given it's limited use in modern warfare !

OK, thanks to most of you who support the AF and DON’T think of us as the “easy service”. I think most people who view us as that are just jealous. ;)
A lot of people don’t realize it but the AF is changing drastically. We no longer do bike PT tests (thanks Wolfgang) but run 1.5 miles and do pushups and situps just like the other services. I do not feel in any way that our contribution to the war is in any way “limited”. True that we don’t have any infantry-type career fields but why do we need them? Between the Marines and the Army, our country has that covered. We pick up where you guys leave off, which is in the specialized warfare, technology, etc. The AF is more than planes and if you look around any FOB, camp, and battlefield here you are sure to find the AF working right alongside the other services--- on the ground. We are here filling our own billets as well as those that the Army apparently cannot afford to fill (exactly what I’m doing here!). Along those lines, AF standard deployments are no longer 3-4 month stints out here; we are going the long haul LIKE YOU GUYS and serving a full year as well.
And sorry, if we can live in nice air-conditioned tents instead of ditches, why not?? I’ve always been told “work smarter, not harder”. :) But we’re not always in cushy conditions anyway. Since we are out here working with the other services, we generally work/live in the same conditions as them (on the same token, in my job stateside, I work with all services and trust me, they have it just as good as we do!).
Personally, I don’t mind the playful banter… I think it’s all in good fun (and like I said, with some jealousy as well). But just so you guys know, the stereotype of the “chair force” is slowly slipping away.

most people judge effectiveness by body count. i come from a long line of military service tradition and ship out for the navy in may. the af and navy do every bit as much to defend this country as the army or marines. if we did not have the arsenal of the af or navy we would have been invaded a long time ago . the navy defends the shipping lanes that keep this country and most of the world running. the af clears the way by taking out comm and radar stations to clear way for ground soldiers. it is no doubt that the army and devil dogs take more casualties, they have it the hardest by a mile, but that doesnt mean there job is more important. every woman or man that puts on a u.s. service uniform whether it be admin or infantry gives up most of their rights and crappy pay to defend all of us. i am very thankful to all servicemember swhether they serve for 2 years or 20.

The various branches of the service make up a team. Each one performs the mission assigned to them and they normally do it very well indeed. We help each other in tight situations on top of that. When the Marines or Army personnel are pinned down by the enemy, who do they call to help them out? When an Air Force pilot goes down, who comes and pulls his bacon out of fire? Like I said: A team.

I was in the Army, but I can tell you most military respect the Airforce as being the most professional and best trained branch of service. The other branches are catching up though as high tech weapons systems are being used even by the infantry.

In my opinion other than the few airforce apecial forces personell and some of the pilots, they're a bucnh of pansies. The army navy and marines take the fight to the enemy and ram it home, while the airforce flys so high they rarely even see the terrain. If you want to stand tall, join up with th real military, ARMY, NAVY, MARINES..........
