They are lousy for weight loss. I know I am on them. All they do for weight is maintain your weight, so you don't gain any more weight.
As far as taking them if you do not have a thyroid problem......your thyroid would get used to them and slow down its production of thyroid hormone, so in a sense you would actually be slowing down your metabolism. You could have symptoms such as a fast heart rate leading to chest pain, excessive sweating, nervousness, diarrhea, and dizziness. You may lose weight, but only on extremely high doses of the med and at these high doses it could cause a heart attack. Don't take chances.

Someone else just asked this. No, you will NOT lose weight. They don't even make the people who HAVE to take them for their thyroid problems lose weight.
If you don't have a thyroid problem and you try to take these, you would become DEATHLY ill.
Diet and exercise. That is the ONLY way to lose weight. Pills do not work. No pills.

True.
If you take thyroid hormone not needing it, you will develop hyperthyroidism, expressed by:
Insomnia
Weight loss (the only desired effect)
Rapid heartbeat with risk of arrythmia or heart attack
Hyperactivity
Irritability (proneness to be angry or touchy)
In short: DONT take a med without needing it
Go to a nutritionist or an endocrinologist to see safer ways to loose weight.

Taking thyroid medication for weight loss is dangerous. On some bodybuilding sites they mention it, and one possible side effects is to mess up your endocrine system enough to need to be permanently medicated. You could turn off your own thyroid temporarily or permanently.

There are some that claim you lose weight...
But if you have a thyroid disorder, it's best that you see your doctor so they can prescribe a dosage tailored to your needs.

You would eventually muck up your thyroid gland, don't consider taking them for weight loss, it used to be done and it killed people!
