You all need to quit it. I'm about to give it to you straight sweetheart. A hot comb is primarily used to staighten natural hair. Hair that has never been processed by chemicals. The back of the comb and not the teeth is what is used to straighten out the hair. A flat iron is used to do the same thing BUT it won't straighten out natural hair the way a hot comb will so it is primarily used for chemically treated hair.

A hot comb can be electric or heated on the stove. It's much more damaging to the hair shaft than the flat iron.

My experience has been that the flat iron gets much better results. However, a good one is NOT INEXPENSIVE. You can expect to pay hundreds of dollars for a professional quality ceramic, which is the top of the line.

Actually the results are very similar. The flat iron is just newer way to straighten hair. It's similar to the manual typewriter and the electronic typewriter. Same results but one is easier to use. The hot comb must be used by a professional because if to hot it can burn your hair out instantly where on your flat iron your temperature is controlled.

Personally, I prefer the hot comb cuz you get right down to your roots and you can do basically anything with a hot comb. It looks more natural and it does a better job.
Flat iron may give you kinks if you hold it on your hair too long and overall, it doesnt give as nuce of presentation as the hot comb..

People prolly use the flat iron more because its faster and less expensive.
Hot combs are usually used in salons and are very expensive, what with the oil and the burner you havta buy for it.

No matter which you choose, you are damaging your hair. It's just a matter of how fast it's being damaged. Good call on saying no to a perm/relaxer, those are terrible for hair. I would definitely recommend a flat iron WITH the use of a thermal protector. The hot comb will damage your hair quicker than a flat iron, but you muuuust use a thermal protector. I use a CHI flatiron, with CHI Silk Infusion serum. It works wonders :)

a hot comb looks like a curling iron with teeth. usually you heat it on the stove, it isn't electric. the new combs you can plug in and they get extremly hot, alot more than a flat iron. that is why ethnic hair needs a hot comb and not a flat iron. the irons won't straighten it out enough.

the comb is more damaging definitely. they're only really used on afro hair, my grandma dragged one through her afro for years and i swear it was burnt to death, you could smell singed hair when she was doing it! flat irons are still damaging but not as much so.
