It depends on the breed. I met with a veterinary nutritionist who determined the proper "human food" diet for my Chesapeake Bay Retriever, and I began feeding my dog chicken, brown rice and green beans, mixed together casserole-style. As a special treat, sometimes he gets catfish nuggets or canned tuna. He doesn't need any supplements, his coat is very shiny, he is healthy, happy and energetic. I was told that he should rarely eat beef and should never eat pork because of his breed, but that he can have any and all fowl, as often as I want to feed it to him. I was also told that he should not have wheat-based products very often but that he can have cheese or milk once in awhile. This is the right diet for a Chessie, but might not be the right diet for a chihuahua, or a Bernese Mountain dog. Other breeds can and should eat beef, shouldn't have milk, etc.
The diet the nutritionist came up with is derived from the indiginous foods of the region in which the breed originated, in the days before commercial dog food was widely available.
I don't know where you live, but check with your vet to see if they know a nutritionist in your area.

I have fed my dogs homemade dog food for years. I picked and chose from a Holistic dog food book to try and make a well rounded food. I used raw beef and lots of vegtables (puree), and mixed them into a meatloaf if you will. Call to inquire and for more info.. My name is Jonathan #831-915-9008, and I would love to hear from you.

I live in the Caribbean in T&T and most of us love animals than ourselves. I don't like to cook but I am good at it.I cook every day for my dogs sometime every other day.The way that I cook is like I'm cooking for any human being but the only thing is that I put a lot of meat for them because dogs love meat (eg liver). It have Proten in it. If you like you can go to the Veterinarians to get Vitamins For your pet dog they will discribe what is best to used.

With the raw diet you should have it all balanced out so you don't need to add anything extra. Homemade food without extra vitamins is still better than kibble. You can pick up multivitamins for dogs at the pet store to feed daily with whatever food.

Talk to your vet. He/ she will have suggestions. Also look into supplement dog foods. Many are natural or organic and come with recipes for home-made food.
