kate, I think everyone here has concluded that it is very important to live near your work or your daily activity...I guess we all are tired of traffic...

I may get a few thumbs down for my opinion, but frankly, if the city has "Valley" in the title, it's not for you. Granted I've only lived in LA for 19 years, but The Valley cities are where you move to, once you're married and starting a family, and looking to buy a house.
I agree with the one above me too, that it's a big deal to live near where you work - at least reasonably close. Commuting can be a total nightmare out here.
And I agree that a beach community might be right for you too - lots to do, lots to see, lots of people to meet.
Even though it's sort of in the valley, you might find affordable housing in Burbank or Toluca Lake, or for a little more money, West Hollywood is rent-controlled, and pretty central to most of the city.
Best of luck to you!

are you looking for somewhere with other singles?
then i would suggest a beach community or somewhere with a lot of apartments, as only married couples with four jobs can afford a house here.

if it's safety, then statistically, thousand oaks and simi valley are the safest.

however, either way, you will pay for the privilege.

i agree though, try to live as close as is reasonably possible to your work, to minimize a horrendous commute.

If you can afford it, Santa Barbara is right on the beach and one of SC's hot spots. if you wanna be able to go out and have fun, this place might be the place to be if u dont wanna be in a huge city like LA

You don't say where you will be working, but I think an apt. in santa monica/west l.a. would be nice. It's within walking distance to shops and restaurants, and somewhat near the beach. The people in these areas are pretty down to earth and nice...But, again, it depends where you are working.

For overall quality of life I would suggest Simi Valley. It is safe and clean. It is fairly easy to get to many attractions and to head north if you need to go that way.
