What causes an abnormal result?
The exact cause of changes in the cells or the cervix is still unknown. However, these changes are often associated with a virus which can be transmitted by sexual intercourse.
The human papilloma virus (HPV) is a very common infection of the cervix which is generally sexually transmitted. Many women catch the virus at some time. In most cases it clears naturally without the woman knowing it is there. Some forms of the virus can cause genital warts. Other types can cause cervical abnormalities which clear up when the virus has gone. In some women, however, the virus remains present for a number of years and cervical abnormalities will, in a few of these women develop into cancer if left untreated.

No it doesn't. Abnormal smears are due to HPV. A massive percentage of the population, who have ever been sexually active, have this antibody.
The virus is probably carried indefinitely, so if either you or partner ever had other partners they may have been affected then.
The problem will only ultimately stand any chance of being solved if all males and females are immunised when young. The vaccine now exists, but the decision who gets it and when still remains undecided. This is mainly due to Joe public's irrational fears of what doctors do!

No of course not!
A smear test is used to diagnose Pre-Cancerous cells!
Although it's not clear what causes abnormalities in the cervix to become cancerous, it is known that the human papilloma virus (HPV) plays an important role.
There are many types of HPV. Some are well known for causing genital warts, although these don't lead to cervical cancer. Others have been shown to cause abnormalities in the cells lining the cervix

If you mean an abnormal Pap smear, no, that test means there are some abnormal cells that need to be biopsied to see if they are pre-cancerous or not. It's not a test for STD's. My theory on monogamy is this, if you feel in your gut that your mate/spouse/sig other, is having an affair or has had, your gut reaction is normally true, you will find the truth by asking questions, if the person gets real defensive............well, let's just say they are guilty as charged, and looking for ways to throw your attention somewhere else, like asking you if you had been unfaithful. Dodging the question usually means there is some sort of truth in the question being asked.

Not all abnormal smears are caused by STD's. However, some abnormal smears can be caused by the HPV virus which is sexually transmitted. That does not, however, prove infidelity. HPV is very common (over half of adults have or have had a HPV infection in their lifetime) and it has the capacity to linger in the body for many years with or WITHOUT symptoms (symptoms include abnormal paps and/or warts). So even if the abnormal pap is caused by HPV, either you or your husband could have had the virus for many years (even before you both got married) and it was simply dormant until now.

No. An abnormal smear test is just pointing out that cells that won't normally develop in your cervix are present, it could be from yeast infections (which can be caused by wearing too tight underwear, to not changing your undies soon after you sweat a lot to even hormonal imbalances), to atypical cells flagging changes prior to development of cancer.
What you should do is call your care provider and ask what kind of abnormality is there and work your way from there. But it doesn't mean that your partner was unfaithful, unless it's a VD and he has it too.

It is not the result of unfaithfulness. An abnormal smear test just means the test was not taken correctly, they found bad cells which could result in more tests, or nothing is wrong. You will need to have your annual in 6 month rather than waiting for a while year to pass just to make sure everything is ok.

No, it does not mean that your partner has been unfaithful. anyone who is or has been sexually active can have an abnormal smear at any time. the whole purpose of a smear test is to detect abnormal cells at an early stage.
An abnormal smear may mean you have repeat smears every three to six months for a few years; the abnormality may settle down by itself, as mine did, with no need for further treatment; or it may need further investigation. It is important that you keep your smear test appointments; it could save your life one day.

It does not mean your partner has been unfaithful.
Have a talk with your GP or Practise Nurse. They will explain abnormal smears to you professionally.

No it does not mean that. Almost every woman has at least one abnormal pap test in her lifetime. I have had 2 so far.
