Me too. But the fact that you have been sticking with it is great. You have my admiration. I should think that as you are there longer you will feel more comfortable...just like everything else. Think back to a time where you felt this way before...like the first day of school. And then think of how comfortable you became . It's the same.

Way to go on the 6 lb if you are needing to drop a few. I have been considering some fitness classes as well. I have been through a lot lately, emotionally and physically, and I have gained a LOT of weight, and I was already heavy.

This is a renaissance time for me. A rebirth, finding a new self, and the reason I was able to even think about joining a gym with some of the same fears as you...is because I just don't give a damn anymore what other people think. This is a beautiful symptom of late-30's-ness. When I find the right membership for me, ie, the classes that I want (it's hard to find yoga and tai chi here, maybe I will have to settle for a stretching or low impact workout or some karate), I'm going to strut in there proudly and do my workout. Maybe you can do the same thing. This, coming from me, where a couple weeks ago, I felt funny just taking a walk around the neighborhood...after all people were driving by??? I thought they were probably all going to point and laugh and holler out the window "GIVE UP, you are HOPELESS" but they didn't. And I have a great middle finger response if it had happened. Truth is, most people in a gym, and hopefully on the road, are paying attn to their own thing.

Chin up, head high, shoulders back. You don't have to be afraid of anything and this is all about YOU baby.

I do have to empathize about the treadmills. My uncle once got thrown by one, it is a precious family story...tears roll everytime we tell it. Treadmills also have been the punchline to a lot of sitcom jokes and I have laughed my butt off at every one of them. I would not want to be the one people are laughing at. I don't think they are as dangerous as long as you aren't a total buffoon, as for my uncle, he was very very fat, and short so the machine likely wasn't even meant for someone his size. He was also an alcoholic, he was honestly probably drunk when it happened. If they scare you, there are NON-electric ones where you cause the motion, they stop when you stop. That may be a good compromise.

I have been going to the gym for years and I still feel that way. I guess that is not very encouraging. But then again just think of it this way: at least you are getting healthy. Everyone is focused on their own workout usually so don't worry about feeling stupid, and if you do fall on your face, get up, laugh it off and smile, people will forget it ever happened.

As far as the machines, you should get a personal training session with a trainer at the gym to see what each machine does and the proper way to use it. That way you can be sure to use it the correct way and get the most out of it.

do no longer permit people like the 1st responder who made the attractive remark intimidate you. no longer all and sundry is going to the gym to envision different persons out. incredibly maximum folk are only like your self and are nervous/intimidated. do no longer permit your self substitute right into a statistic. maximum folk purchase a gym club, attend a pair circumstances, and then end going. it incredibly is why a marvelous type of gyms have a huge up front cost. a marvelous type of fellows interior the gym think of you're there for them, ignore approximately them and concentration on your work out. earlier you pass to the gym attempt to formulate a plan for what you need your work out to encompass, and then concentration on polishing off your reps/gadgets. the very ultimate concern you ought to do is to get a piece out chum. locate somebody who can pass a protracted with you to maintain you corporation and help save you from feeling awkward. some gyms even have directories or bulletin boards for that kind of concern.

I've been through that but I'm sure everyone else feels the same way. If they don't feel that way, then since they don't care what people think of them, they sure as heck don't have an opinion of you. People never watch as much as you think they do. If they have something to say, throw a dumbell at their knee.

Wait until someone else uses it, watch what they do, then show off in front of the ladies like you have done it a million times before. "60% of the time it works, every time."

Most people at the gym are so involved with their own image they don`t notice anyone else is there.
