I thought this guy was showing interest in me - he'd do favors for me, talk to me all soft and sweet and did double takes when he saw me - so I asked him out, and he agreed to go (he even blushd and had a grin from ear to ear) but I should've known I wasnt ready to date yet. (Selling the house, drama with the ex, etc.)

I see him two months later and remind him of that date. He stands real close to me, softly tells me "To be honest...."
he's in a relationship now, it's not "official" and so on, and so on. I nodded my head and was about to walk away, the strange thing is he kept going on about it "I'm out of the game, I'm not in the market anymore" then he says "Thanks for the offer though, I appreciate it"

I GOT IT DUDE!! I understand.

Why'd he feel the need to go on and on with the explanations?

He was just nervous about telling you so some guys just ramble. He was nervous just cause most nice guys, and her seems like a nice guy, don't like to start controversy. He was just rambling let him be and let is go. I am sure he was not trying to be offensive and if you asked him about it he would apologize immediately so let it roll of your back.

well in my opinion maybe the reason that he may have smiled when you asked him out was because he thought that he had been sly by dating two girls at one time!!! that mystery girl could have been with him for a long time and all he wanted from you was a one night stand and he could tell that you werent gonna go that far so he eggagerated that he wasnt on the market and that you couldnt have him!!!!!11 but thats just me think what you want to!!!!!!!

Almost sounds like he's trying to convince himself what he's telling you.But he could also feel like he owes you an explanation n was also flattered n a bit embarrassed.Well I'd forget about him.Plenty more fish in the sea.

He probably really appreciates and feels comfortable being around u but he make be really dating someone.
He doesnt wanna break your relationship as friends or he was just being a really cocky guy that thinks that he can get any girl he want.

Perhaps he felt guilty about not following up the date, I assume that was what happened.

He wanted you to understand what he was saying and not feel like you had no idea what was going on. He didnt want to hurt your feelings.
