I am 22 years old and I haven't been to the dentist in four years. I have naturally nice teeth, they are very straight and, because I take pretty good care of them at home, white. Because of these factors, I didn't think it was necessary to go to a dentist the entire time I was in college. Lately, I have noticed that my rear teeth are looking very worn down (my boyfriend told me that I grind in my sleep) and discolored, and my gums don't appear to be in great shape either. I am afraid that when I go to the dentist they are going to think I have the most digusting mouth ever. I know it's a stupid thought- but does anyone have any advice?

Hi. I thought the same thing about my teeth three months ago, I was embarrassed to go to the dentist because it had been so long since my last visit (1999). I made an appointment, went in and all the women behind the counter had beautiful teeth which made me feel much worse, but they made me feel so comfortable. I too have naturally straight, pretty teeth but wasn't feeling so great about myself at the time because I had some issues and needed a lot of work done. I'm an abrasive brusher, night grinder, obsessed with whitening products, and had a few cavities to top it off. My work was all finished last month and I now feel much better about my smile again. Don't worry I'm sure it will all work out just fine, have a little faith and good luck!

You may feel self conscious but dentists, like all doctors, have seen it all. And 4 years is past due for a visit, but some people don't go for many more years than that. It's best to go now, and nip any problems in the bud- and save yourself time and money later on, by getting small problems fixed before they turn into big ones. If your gums truly do get bad, and infected, it can even affect your heart or kidney's, so go early and you'll be fine.

Dentists and hygienists are there as professionals and are taught during training to behave so. Just to reassure, we don't judge you, or think bad of you, or anything like that at all. We see teeth all day everyday and have seen it all before. The longer you leave it, the worse your problems will be; I'm a tooth grinder myself, and if I didnt wear my biteguard I wouldnt have any teeth left!
I wouldnt worry about it; take a deep breath and make an appointment.

That's totally normal to feel like that but you'll be fine. The dentist and any assistants or hygienest will not judge you or think bad about you. They are all there to help. But you do need to go in....Good Luck

You have nothing to be ashamed of. Ask some of your friends to recommend a dentist to you. I wish you the best of luck.
