Here's the trick. If you set them free, it's not only setting them free in the physical sense, it also letting go of them in yourself.

If you are waiting for them to return, you haven't really let them go, have you?

Maybe for a picometer, or some other microscopically small measurement.

I set her free in 1970 and haven't seen her since.
