it's a hick. Someone who sits on their porch in a rocking chair with a shotgun in one hand, a beer in the other, wearing a dirty, old, white t-shirt with holes in it that is too small, overalls with only one of the straps on, a trucker hat that is most likely camo, and they just sit there. And they wait for a jackrabbit to hop by so they can have something for dinner. Ok, so that is super cliche, but really, if you want to know what a redneck is, just ask Jeff Foxworthy of Blue Collar Comedy. He says it is a "glorious absence of sophistication. It can be full time or part time."

A "red neck" originally meant a person who is working their farm, and has a sunburned neck from being out in the sun. It's evolved to mean a person who is from the country, a hick, someone who is close minded, someone who isn't well educated. But I live in Texas, where some great people are proud to call themselves rednecks.
It's only a derogatory term if you use it with malicious intent.

A "red neck" originated with farmers. Their necks would get red after spending an entire day in the sun. Farmers wear caps to protect their faces and wear long sleeved shirts unless it is very hot. The neck doesn't get covered and turns red after being out all day.

I think it is generally defined as a white person who lives in a rural setting and who isn't very sophisticated when it comes to social graces. The type of person who isn't intelligent enough to be embarrassed for himself; therefore others must be embarrassed for him.
Listen to Jeff Foxworthy's routines on this and you will get the idea. Most often it refers to men, but he includes women in his definitions.

unlike the others i see a big difference in rednecks and hicks, rednecks are not trashy and do not beat their wives.we are laid back country folk who don't feel the need to live fast paced lives and find joy in going hunting, fishing, and spending time with friends and we are not trashy and not offended by being called a redneck....don't knock it til you try it....
